I took my mom’s old 90s maxi floral dress that she hadn’t worn in 20 years and turned it into a soft, romantic French-style tea length dress. Same fabric, completely new vibe. This one feels extra special because it’s from her closet.
Last time I visited my parents, Mom pulled out this big floral dress from the back of her closet.
The original dress was a long, shapeless floral sack with huge shoulder pads and a super high neckline. The fabric though? Beautiful soft rayon with tiny pink and cream roses. It had that vintage drape that you just can’t find anymore.

I wanted to turn it into something I could wear to brunch or afternoon tea — that effortless French girl energy. Shorter hem, softer neckline, and a bit more fitted at the waist.
The Transformation Story
I started by taking out the shoulder pads. Then I completely removed the sleeves and reshaped the armholes. That part was scary because the fabric is slippery. I cut too much on one side first and had to patch it with a scrap from the hem. Classic me.
I took in the sides to give it some shape and created a gentle princess seam on the back. For the neckline, I cut a soft scoop and used the original fabric to make a thin binding. My first attempt at the binding looked wavy and sad, so I unpicked it twice before it finally sat nicely.
The biggest change was the length. I chopped it from ankle-length to just below the knee — perfect tea length. Then I added a delicate ruffle at the hem using the leftover fabric I cut off. That ruffle took forever but it made the dress.
I almost ruined the whole thing when I tried to dye it a little darker pink. The color came out patchy at first and I panicked. Thankfully after a second bath it evened out into this beautiful muted rose tone.
The Final Dress
I wore it last weekend to a garden café meetup and felt like I stepped out of a French movie.

I can’t believe this is the same dress my mom wore to 90s family parties. Now it has a second life and I get to carry a little piece of her with me.
