Hey everyone in the Thrift & Stitch crew,
I was having one of those “I swear I’m only looking” days at Goodwill when I wandered into the men’s section (yes, I do that). This light blue oversized button-down was hanging there looking all sad and huge. $4. Soft cotton, no stains, decent buttons. I threw it in my basket thinking “this could be something cute.”
Here’s what it looked like straight out of the bag – boxy, long enough to be a dress on me, shoulders drooping. Classic men’s shirt energy.

I wanted something I could actually wear with high-waisted jeans or a skirt without looking like I borrowed my dad’s work shirt. So I decided to crop it right at the natural waist and use the huge bottom piece for a hairband. Matchy-matchy but make it chill.
Except… I got excited with the scissors. Measured once, cut once, and suddenly the hem was sitting way higher than I planned. Like, “hello underboob” territory. I actually laughed out loud in my room because it was so bad. Had to unpick a bit, add a tiny strip back, and re-hem. I don’t know if this makes sense but sometimes my brain just goes “yolo” with the fabric and my hands follow. Live and learn, right?

After fixing that little disaster, I did a simple rolled hem on the bottom so it sits nice and flat. For the hairband I cut a long strip from the leftover fabric, folded it, stitched the long edge, turned it right-side out, and made a soft tie band. No elastic, just fabric – super comfortable and it doesn’t dig into my head.
Now the after pics… I’m honestly obsessed. The top feels breezy, the color still pops, and the hairband is the perfect little detail. I wore the whole set out for coffee yesterday and got two compliments. Zero dollars spent beyond the original $4.
The Before (thrift store reality check)
That oversized, sleepy men’s shirt that looked like it had zero potential.
The After (what actually happened)
Cropped exactly where I wanted, hairband included, and way more “me.”

I love how this came out even with the little hiccup. It’s the kind of project that makes you feel like you can actually do this upcycling thing. Maybe, I also would like to see the results of your recent creative renovations!
