Boyfriend's Old Cargo Pants → Spicy Halter Cami Top

My boyfriend finally agreed to let me raid his “maybe I’ll wear these again” pile. These cargo pants were ancient — faded olive green, heavy canvas-like cotton, with giant pockets and frayed hems. He hadn’t touched them in years. I told him “trust me” and ran to my sewing corner.

The pants looked like they belonged on a construction site. Super boxy, zero shape, but the fabric was thick and held up well.

The Wild Transformation

I started by cutting off the legs right below the crotch (sorry babe). Then I opened up the side seams and crotch seam to lay the front and back pieces flat. I used one of my favorite fitted tank tops as a rough pattern.

I traced the shape, curving the sides in a lot for a body-hugging fit. Then I cut everything out. The fabric was so stiff that my scissors got tired halfway — I actually had to switch to heavier ones.

For the halter straps, I used the leftover waistband fabric. I cut two long strips, folded them, and stitched them into nice wide straps that tie at the neck. That part was easy. What wasn’t easy? The bust area. I wanted a little ruching but I pulled the gathering threads too tight on the first try and it bunched up like a sad accordion. I unpicked it, calmed down, and did it more gently the second time.

I finished the edges with a simple double fold hem because the canvas was too thick for clean bias binding. Then I added a little tie at the back for adjustability.

The Final Look

I tried it on , it actually looks hot. The thick fabric gives it structure, the color is that perfect military green that goes with everything, and the halter neck makes it super flattering.

My boyfriend saw me wearing it and just said “…huh.” I’m taking that as a win.

Total cost: $0. Time: about 4 hours including all my mistakes. Now I have a unique top that no one else will ever have, made from pants that were literally going to the trash.
